Grafton, Massachusetts
MAGAZINE
From winter of 2005 to spring of 2008 I was the primary writer of cover features, secondary articles, and profiles for this advancement publication. From winter of 2006 to spring of 2008 I also assumed many editorial responsibilities.
Article samples (all in pdf):
Small Daily Differences includes several short pieces on various outreach initiatives, including participation in a library program in which kids develop their reading skills by reading to specially selected dogs (and one cat).
New Season, New Life spotlights the school’s groundbreaking neonatal foal unit, featuring a program in which students, staff, and members of the community volunteer in shifts to sit round-the-clock with foals in critical care.
What is Your Problem? For this article, the photographer and I sat in on a behavioral consultation for Floyd, the dog featured in the story. The dog’s hair trigger was as unsettling for the clinician as for us.
For this issue I also began a series on translational medicine, starting with research into liver disease processes that affect animals and humans in similar ways.
Forging Healthy Partnerships This three-in-one feature on farm animal medicine took me to a small dairy farm in rural Connecticut at the tail end of February, with mud season in full sway (yes, I wore my boots).
For this issue I also wrote about a patent-pending device to detect waterborne pathogens, and RNAi-based research on schistosomes.
DEVELOPMENT
In collaboration with the veterinary school and with Tufts University’s office of development communications, I have written annual fund appeals in the form of direct mail pieces, letters, and electronic mail. These appeals have gone to two different audiences: alumni and “friends” (primarily clients of the veterinary school’s animal hospitals).
